1st Kings

David’s son, Adonij ah, thought he was next to be king
But David had chosen Solomon and God had agreed
Adonijah proceeded to exalt himself to the throne
And prepared a parade to let it be known

But Solomon appeared riding on the King’s mule
It was made plain Solomon was to rule
Adonij ah and friends were so filled with fear
Adonij ah went to his father and made it all clear

But Bethsheba, Adonij ah’s mother, then interfered
That resulted in the death of her son she endeared
The early days of Solomon’s reign was filled with unrest
Family and friends were made well acquainted with death

Solomon in time married Pharaoh’s daughter
A marriage that later created a problem
God asks Solomon “what was his 1st wish?”
Solomon replied, “wisdom is first on my list”

God gave Solomon a “wise and understanding heart”
He became known as the wisest man on earth
His reign became one of riches and wonder
One being building Solomon’s Temple and Altar

Wisdom is wonderful but not without mistakes
And Solomon, the wisest, did not escape
His wife, Pharaoh’s daughter, made him an Idolater
And 700 wives and 300 concubines was no small order

Solomon’s years as King of Israel was 40
And was buried in the city of David his father
His 1005 songs, 3000 parables and much more
Has inspired people both the rich and the poor

Following Solomon’s death catastrophe raged
Counsel was sought but made little headway
After 120 years Israel is now divided
Perhaps never to be reunited

Jeroboam founded the Northem Kingdom
The Southem Kingdom by Judah and Benjamin
The North, Israel, adopted religions of Egypt
The South, Judah, worshipped God & promising to keep it

Both Kingdoms had their ups and their downs
Good Kings turning bad and bad Kings turning around
The Prophets of God had their hands full
With so many around them acting the fool

There is the story of Ahab and Jezebel
And J ezebel’s plot that was so mean and evil
That she succeeded in having Naboth stoned
Bringing Elij ah’s condemnation for what she had done

The power of God by the Prophets was made plain
Like the time Elijah prayed and it rained and rained
And there was Elisha who followed Elijah
History was in the making, page after page

lst Kings closes with both Kingdoms divided
And condition of each quickly recited
J ehoshaphat in Judah did right in God’s eyes
While Ahaziah did evil in God’s sight
