  • Notes on the Miracles of Our Lord (1866 edition) by Richard Chevenix Trench, D.D.  This book was first published about 1846.  This SwordSearcher module is based on the 1866 edition by Trench. No one who has read his notes on the parables and miracles, will fail to conclude that in a remarkable degree our author is eminently qualified for the work which he has undertaken. He brings to his difficult but most important task, German learning and English good sense, with a very general acquaintance with the interpretations of the fathers: the whole governed and tempered by a truly christian reverence for the Inspired Book. Indeed his reference to patristic lore is so frequent and so reverential, that many of his readers will be disposed to think that he ascribes too much importance to what the great and good men of the church have said.  The Table of Contents for this Book and SS Module look like this:

  • Use of "Pneuma" in the N.T. (E.W. Bullinger on the Holy Spirit

  • Spirit and the Word by Z.T. Sweeney Z. T. Sweeney was a great scholar of the 19/20th centuries and this is perhaps his finest work. “This book discusses in a brief, well-written style the work of the Holy Spirit. The author, Z.T. Sweeney (1849-1926), makes a thorough and convincing argument from the Scriptures that the Holy Spirit operates upon both saint and sinner alike only through the Word of God. This book contains an excellent chart that illustrates this proposition. Every Christian will profit from a study of this classic work.”  Highlights of this work include its brevity and the simplicity of it. So many volumes on this theme will “word you to death” (as one has said), but Sweeny’s will spare you of any boredom and you should be able to read through it in a day or two.

Here are the Chapters for this book:
I -- THE SPIRIT AND THE OLD TESTAMENT
II -- THE SPIRIT AND THE NEW TESTAMENT
III -- THE PERSONALITY AND DIVINITY OF THE SPIRIT
IV -- THE SPIRIT AND JOHN THE BAPTIST
V -- THE SPIRIT AND JESUS
VI -- THE SPIRIT AND THE APOSTLES
VII -- THE SPIRIT AND THE APOSTOLIC CHURCH
VIII -- THE SPIRIT AND THE WORLD
IX -- THE SPIRIT AND CHRISTIANS
X -- THE PARTING WORD

  • Sermons on the Holy Spirit by Gus Nichols (1892-1975) - These, I believe, are some of the best Scriptural Sermons on the theme of THE WORK OF THE HOLY SPIRIT. These sermons, preached by GUS NICHOLS are fairly extensive in the treatment of the topics, which are listed below. When editing each one in Microsoft Word, I would hazard to guess that if these are printed out on paper, they would probable require well over 250 pages. When I attended Lipscomb University back in the early 70's, GUS NICHOLS had already preached these (or similar sermons). I recall, on one occasion, hearing him in person, back in the 60's preaching these (or similar sermons). My dad was the preacher where I attended church, and Brother Gus Nichols was the preacher holding our "GOSPEL MEETING," or "REVIVAL" as some folks prefer to say.  I tried to catch some of the spelling and/or hyphenation mistakes in each of these sermons, but probably missed a few along the way. However, if you are interested in what these sermons cover, you won't go wrong to read and study these Gospel Lessons on the Holy Spirit. These sermons, I believer, are "SECDOND TO NONE" when it comes to fairly and scripturally handling the scriptures on these topics concerning the HOLY SPIRIT.  You want scriptures on the topics covered in these sermons? Gus Nichols gives you the ammunition you need!! When Gus preached each of these Sermons he would extend the Invitation to "Come to Christ," and then, he took many questions from the audience, answering each one quoting "Book, Chapter, and Verse" as he gave his reply to each question. Nichols personally reviewed the audio of each Sermon as it was transcribed and put on paper.  The Topics (or Subjects) covered in this collection of Lectures/Sermons include:

1. BIRTH OF THE SPIRIT
2. BORN OF GOD AND LED BY THE SPIRIT
3. HOLY SPIRIT AND THE SPIRIT WORLD
4. HOLY SPIRIT AND REVELATION
5. BAPTISM OF THE HOLY SPIRIT
6. HOLY SPIRIT AND MIRACULOUS GIFTS
7. INDWELLING OF THE SPIRIT
8. THE FRUIT OF THE SPIRIT
9. UNITY OF THE SPIRIT
10. BLASPHEMY AGAINST THE SPIRIT, (OR THE UNPARDONABLE SIN)

  • Jesus of Nazareth by John A. Broadus (c)1890 - This small book contains three(3) very strong and powerful lectures on Jesus Christ of Nazareth.  Broadus was considered one of the greatest Baptist preachers of the late 19th century.  At the time of these lectures he was president of the Southern Baptist Theological Seminary in Louisville, Ky.  This excellent book contains the following lectures by Broadus:

I. HIS PERSONAL CHARACTER

II. HIS ETHICAL TEACHINGS
